Option Vesting and Expiry Notifications

Cake automatically keeps option holders informed as their options vest and approach expiry. This article explains which notifications are sent, who receives them, and what you can configure.

Vesting notifications

When options vest under their vesting schedule, the option holder receives an email notification, and their updated vested balance appears in their My Cake portal.

Email notifications are enabled by default and can be turned off per grant:

  • Individually: open the offer from the option pool and toggle Email notifications off under Offer settings

  • In bulk: select multiple offers in the pool and choose the email notification option under Bulk actions

Expiry notifications

Cake can notify option holders 30 days before their options expire, giving them time to exercise before the deadline.

This notification is only sent if it's enabled in the expiration settings for the grant, where you'll see the option Send the Optionholder a notification 30 days before expiration. The 30-day timing is fixed and can't be customized.

You can also choose to auto-lapse the options at the date of expiration from the same settings.

Notifications when an employee leaves (PTEP)

PTEP reminders work differently from expiry notifications. When you off-board an employee, you can choose to remind the stakeholder of their right to exercise vested options within their post-termination exercise period (PTEP). This reminder is sent at the time of off-boarding.

What admins receive

Admins don't receive vesting or expiry notifications. The one exception: during off-boarding, you can select Remind me to manually lapse the options after the PTEP, and Cake will notify you when the PTEP ends so you can lapse any unexercised options.

What employees see in their portal

Option holders can view their vesting schedule, vested balance, and expiry dates anytime in their My Cake portal. Notifications supplement this, but the portal is always the source of truth.
