Understanding User Permissions in Cake

Control who can access your company's data and what they can do with it. Setting the right permission levels keeps your information secure while enabling your team to work effectively.

Permission Levels

Cake offers four permission levels to match different roles and responsibilities:

View Only - Perfect for stakeholders who need visibility but shouldn't make changes

  • View all share registry details

  • Access reports and documents

  • Cannot make any changes or modifications

Edit - Ideal for team members who manage day-to-day equity operations

  • Make changes to the share registry

  • Upload and download documents

  • Issue shares and manage transactions

  • Cannot access billing or invite users

Admin - Best for senior team members and trusted advisors

  • All Edit permissions plus:

  • Update payment settings and billing information

  • Access all platform features and reports

  • Cannot invite users or change other users' permissions

Account Owner - Reserved for founders and C-level executives

  • All Admin permissions plus:

  • Invite and remove users

  • Change permission levels for other users

  • Full control over account settings

Choosing the Right Permission Level

Most companies follow these guidelines:

  • Primary account manager (often finance, HR, or legal team lead): Account Owner

  • Senior leadership and key stakeholders: Admin

  • Lawyers and accountants: Admin (for full access to reports and compliance features)

  • Operations team members: Edit

  • Board members and investors: View Only

Managing User Permissions

To view or change user permissions:

  1. Go to CompanySettingsUser access

  2. Find the user you want to modify

  3. Click the pencil icon next to their name

  4. Update their role and permission level as needed

Security tip: Regularly review user permissions to ensure only active team members have access to your company data.
